The Lotus Elan Turbo (inherited it's name from an even more famous model the original Elan) this was a major legend to live up to. In addition it is front wheel drive which was a first for Lotus and a challenge to the purists.

In a recent Classic Car Magazine "shoot out" it came top of the poll against venerable opponents - MGB, Alfa Romeo Spyder, Fiat Barchetta. It was seen to be the fastest in a point to point cross country route.

3855 Series I Elans were built with all but 180 being SE's (turbocharged).
539 Elans were shipped to the USA
The SE cost £19,850 at its launch in 1989. It had a performance envelope of 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds, top speed is 137mph.
